The New Mexico Department of Agriculture is considering five alternative funding options to save the state's Organic Certification Program, which has suffered from a $100,000 a year deficit since 2010, when the agency's funding was cut and the fees it could collect capped. All five possibilities involved increasing fees, and the state's preferred option is to pay for 25 percent of the program out of the Department of Agriculture budget and increase the organic certification application fee by $100 per year.

The 153 organic growers participating in the program generate $40 million in direct sales annually, with about half of the organic produce and meat sold within 100 miles of the farm from which it originated, reports The Los Alamos MonitorFull Story
